I assist a very intelligent lady who has brain trauma. She is interested in sociology. A college textbook on sociology was too difficult for her to read. She does well with a 4th grade reading level, and should be fine with texts up to a highschool level, as long as they are clearly written. Her ability to understand concepts is fine, but texts that are too technical or dense are too challenging.
Since most Sociology texts are aimed at the highlighter-wielding college student, I'm having trouble finding an appropriate book. Please give me all your suggestions, and I'll look into each one.

haha. That's the thing about sociologists...I majored in the subject and they love to use big words to explain simple things. What you might want to do is read the sparknotes of a sociology book before reading the actual book. This way, the more complicated writing falls into place. Try "The Protestant Ethic..." another good work is "Democracy in America" which also has something similar to sparknotes if you search for it online. Good luck, she can succeed!

Non-chapter books for 4th grade reading level?
Nina Lee
I need an Easter basket filler and my son needs new books. The problem is, he doesn't like chapter books (yet) but the books he's choosing are too easy and boring for him.
Does anyone have some suggestions for a boy who loves animals- marine life especially, science, sports, technology, and environmental issues... that are not chapter books. (Or, if they are, have lots of pictures to fool him.)
Thank you!
Who am I, he's in 1st grade. I think that probably has something to do with him not being interested in chapter books yet. That's my guess anyhow.
Thank you, all, for the suggestions!
Love the random house link. Thanks, again!

The Magic School Bus books are *very* popular among the first grade boys in my daughter's class. They fight over the same ones every week. :-) I'm not sure what the reading level is, but they're definitely harder to read with complicated science concepts.
He may enjoy Mercy Watson books or Nate the Great. They're a bit simpler than 4th grade level, but they're fun reading. And with Nate the Great, he can try to solve the case as he reads.
