For quite a long time, I have wanted to write a book about the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. I know what I like in a zombie book, but I don't like the normal smash everything and battle large amounts of zombies with massive guns that defy logic and mow them down like weeds in the grass. I prefer more of the laid back, trying not to draw attention to myself barely struggling to survive kind of books. So, what I want out of this post is...
-What are some of your favorite apocalypse books?
-What haven't you seen in a book like this that you haven't seen yet?

A few years ago I would have suggested faster moving zombies. Zombies that have some ability to organize themselves and use some logic and thought.
I am Legend sort of cured me of that. The zombies in the movie have a type of leader they appear to work as a unit, where there are pawns who sacrifice themselves (or at least more aggressive). They set traps and sprung traps as well as went hunting.
In resident evil they began creating zombies who could not only fight back but moved swiftly though they needed handlers. In some cases they even hide in wait and spring on victims.
In Zombieland the zombies give chase and are pretty fast moving and even set up a few ambushes themselves.
So the stuff I hadn't seen I'm seeing all the time. I can't wait to see World War Z because those zombie things are really moving.
I guess the one thing I'd like to see is a larger number of survivors. No matter the movie or show it always seems like the zombie 'infection' affects most of the population. I'd like to see the odds evened out a little better. And that not everyone who dies gets up a zombie. In Walking Dead it is to the point that people don't even have to be bitten to turn, that somehow if you die you wake up Zombie after a few hours. That is so not cool. How is that possible does that mean everyone has some dormant version of the disease within them? Is the thing in the water? Airborne? I mean it goes from epidemic to pandemic is like seconds. It would be nice if the human race had a little bit of a better chance. At the end of most zombie movies an eradication of the zombies doesn't really seem feasible. Not cool.

Try "The Forest of Hands and Teeth" by Carrie Ryan. Wasn't my cup of tea, but - then again - I didn't know it was a zombie book when I picked it up. The main character lives in a village in the middle of a forest and - you guessed it - the forest is full of zombies. This girl and her love interests (oh yes, there's more than one) leave the village one day and make their way through the zombie-infested terrain. I can't remember why they leave, but they do. So read it. Maybe you'll like it.
Also, you should watch the movie 28 Days Later. I never watched Weeks Later, but Days Later was awesome; and Cillian Murphy is a gorgeous beast. I think there's a graphic novel on it, if you're into that stuff. Hope you find what you're looking for.
