Accuracy of a book, Wiki, Google?
Tony
I was talking with a colleague about a book, and he asked me if I trust the author or not and if I'm sure that the information he provides is accurate. I told him that I look in Wikipedia and different websites to make sure of some information, but he told me that neither Wikipedia nor google search (websites) could be considered accurate.
Does anyone buy that? Because I feel like he is just trying to frustrate me.
One more question, aren't the information on Wikipedia accurate to some extent, and of course not on every topic? Because I told him Wiki is usually accurate, especially when they cite their sources and it appears reliable. Not to mention that if many websites provide the same information it has to be correct somehow.
Answer
With any kind of source, you have to evaluate its reliability, and it sounds as if you are doing that pretty well. You're not just blindly believing what you read in a book or on Wikipedia; you're intelligently distinguishing between well-sourced material and nonsense contributed by some wacko wingnut.
The one thing I'd disagree with you on is the point about the same information appearing on many websites. One notorious example of this not being true are those many, many "quotation" websites. They are very frequently wrong, and they copy wholesale from each other, so you'll find a wrongly-attributed or misquoted or completely made-up "quote" on dozens of them.
