What are some good books for 6th graders?

Answer
When I was in 6th grade I used to read Encyclopedia Brittanica. It was pretty good.
We moved every 3 months, so I just learned not to make friends and to hang out in the library as often as I could.

What do you want to do with the books? The word "good" is meaningless without a "judgment system" - a way to measure goodness.

Do you want to:
- put him to sleep
- make him grow up stupid
- give her recreational reading
- train them in underwater demolitions

A "good" book for putting them to sleep is not necessarily the best for training them in underwater demolitions. A book that they read for recreational reading might have a lot of overlap with a book that helps them grow up to be stupid.

Who said that "in the short term the stock market is a popularity contest and in the long term is the the best indicator of value" - was that Warren Buffet? Without a clear measure of goodness the use of the word "good" is more of a request for a popularity contest, and less an indicator of any real value.

If my wife were going to give a young girl a book series that is entertaining, but builds curiosity about non-fiction subjects (typically scientific subjects) - she would recommend the books by Madeline L'Engle. She could also introduce some of Tolkien - both entertainment and strengthening language.

My wife says that a "good" book is one that develops you as a person. You build empathy because you are understanding another person. You are building an understanding of History and other ways of life. Anne of Green Gables did that for her in 8th grade.

The books that speak to a girls soul - do not really speak to a boys, sometimes. If you foisted Anne of Avonlea on me at that age - it would only have enhanced my growing chauvinism. C.S. Lewis through Narnia helped me to learn courage, and how to treat others with respect and decency. Harry Potter would have taught me well to contempt adults, disobey and disrespect them. I'm glad I did not read it until later.

The Hardy Boys - especially some of the space-based adventures were good for me. I also loved the whole Tarzan series .. well in 2nd grade I read that series. It taught me horrible table manners, but it also taught me that a will to survive and the exercise of cunning and strength .. can get you through tough situations. That was a good lesson for a kid with my (rough) childhood.

There are links for great books lists.
If Oprah (and her politics) are your agenda - here is a list:

If you liked the book "the well-trained mind" and wanted to know its reading list then you find it here:

is breaking dawn a inappropriate book for 6th graders?

jessie

please leave a lot of detail and y DONT RUIN BOOK

Answer
The book mentions and talks about mature topics, so I don't really think so. The book series is aimed towards teenagers, so there will be some things that younger readers, such as 6th graders, might find inappropriate or make them uncomfortable.
If you are the 6th grader (or if its about a friend), have someone you trust (and who is older) read the book first and let them decide whether you are mature enough or not to read it.
