My son loves to read the Pokemon books. I can ask him what he is reading and he has no problem telling me.
However, when I went to the school conferences, the teacher stated that when he reads at school he does not have a good comprehension of what he just read.
I need to help him improve his comprehension. His skill level is that of a second grader, average. Does anyone have any suggestions that could spark an interest in improving his comprehension without it seeming like more homework?
It is not my intention to make him stop reading Pokemon. I am too liberal to engage in censorship. I wanted to find other books that would excite his desire to read. I want to increase his comprehension ability without killing his desire to curl up on the couch and read a book. I am "old" a "mom" and kids think old mom things are boring. LOL!

What chapter books would you recommend for a 9-year-old boy?
Paradox
My son is 9 years old in the 3rd grade and doesn't like to read. I love books and want my son to learn how much fun books can be. He is about a 2nd grade reading level but he's so smart. I know he would be a great reader if I could just get him interested in books.
Any book series suggestions? Something that would appeal to an active little boy and keep his interest.
Answer
My nine year old is in the same boat. His older and younger brothers 10 and 8 love to read and read much better than he does. He likes the Magic Tree House series, and the My Teacher is an Alien series. Our school has accelerated reader tests which encourage the kids to read, so i have offered him additional rewards at home for points earned.
He is sitting here and says he also likes Junie B. Jones, The Stinky Cheese Man, The Hardy Boys and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
There is a great website called Boys Read....
boysread.org
that lists books that are more likely to appeal to boys than girls. check it out for more ideas and good luck.
