I'm 25 years old just picked up some of my first books ever. I'm not sure I picked good ones or bad ones. I bought Deadpool "Dead" part 1, Animal Man, Wolverine issue 300, The Dark Knight, and Captain America, part of the New 52... What are some other great book series that I can start and not have problems understanding based on previous stories?

Answer
Deadpool is great if you already know a bit about the story, but you don't have to know it all to enjoy it. Wolverine is also pretty great. Captain America is awesome but not part of the new 52, the 52 is DC Captain America, Wolverine, and Deadpool are all Marvel. Here are my recommendations: ASTONISHING X-MEN, AVENGERS CHILDREN'S CRUSADE, BATMAN, BATTLE SCARS, CAPTAIN AMERICA & BUCKY, DAREDEVIL, DETECTIVE COMICS, FEAR ITSELF THE FEARLESS, GENERATION HOPE, MORNING GLORIES, NEW MUTANTS, SECRET AVENGERS, SEVERED, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, THE AVENGERS, THE AVENGERS X-SANCTION, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, THE NEW AVENGERS, THE PUNISHER, UNCANNY X-FORCE, UNCANNY X-MEN, VENOM, WINTER SOLDIER, WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, X-CLUB, X-FACTOR, X-MEN, X-MEN LEGACY

What are some great menswear pattern books?

Hello,

I'm basically going to teach myself how to make full garments. No stress, I am familiar with sewing, but mostly with just repairing and altering. I was wondering if there were any great book to learn pattern making for menswear? I am very interested in menswear and would love to get started!
Please let me know! What are some great books and some great tips on getting started?

Answer
Men's wear isn't very difficult, it more time consuming because of the many details such as collars cuffs, waistbands, pockets, etc. The details are what changes simple basic garments into fashion garments: you cut a pattern for a basic yoked shirt and by changing up the pockets, collar shape and sleeve length you can have a casual plaid shirt, a classic solid dress shirt, a business casual stripe or patterned shirt or a fancy formal shirt. As a bonus men's clothes are easier to fit as they don't have those two difficult to fit bumps in front!

My favorite men's pattern cutting book is Winifred Aldrich's Metric Pattern Cutting for men's wear. It has almost everything you need, from the classic yoked shirt to jeans to pajamas. The directions are clear and easy to follow and do-able for even a beginner. I got this book to make clothes my son, he's around seven feet in height and impossible to buy for and the few things available in his height were ridiculous expensive. So I started making most of his clothes for him, using this book for making the patterns: http://www.amazon.com/Pattern-Cutting-Menswear-Winifred-Aldrich/dp/1405182938/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1320767050&sr=1-2

As an accessory book I highly highly recommend David Ppage Coffin's Shirtmaking book. It comes with patterns and instructions for the details that make a shirt stand out: variations on the yoke, several collars, pockets, and the BEST pattern for that fiddly shirt sleeve placket found on men's dress shirts. It should be essential reading and kept close to the sewing machine: http://www.amazon.com/Shirtmaking-Developing-Skills-Fine-Sewing/dp/1561582646/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1320767105&sr=1-1

Also you need a good book on making pants: http://www.amazon.com/Making-Trousers-Men-Women-Multimedia/dp/1589234499/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b again, the details count and Coffin shows how to make the details that elevate pants from "loving hands at home" to "tailor made"

For tailoring jackets this book: http://www.amazon.com/Tailoring-Classic-Sewing-Perfect-Jacket/dp/1589232305/ref=pd_sim_b_3 has all the important information that you will need, whether you do classic hand tailoring or the modern engineered methods using fusible interfacings.

For general learn- to- sew- clothes information Simplicity patterns has an extensive classroom section, including a free sewing 101 course suitable for both guys and girls. it comes with a free print at home pattern for pajama bottoms which will teach you all the basics of garment sewing. http://www.simplicity.com/t-sewing-how-to.aspx

This site also has lots of helpful information regarding how to sew, all the topics are PDF's to download, print and keep close to the machine: http://sewing.org/html/guidelines.html

Pattern making and sewing quality clothes both come with steep learning curves, but the more you make the better you will become. There's not a lot of shortcuts; time patience and practice are the best teachers. Start with less expensive fabrics and simpler styles with few details and as you build your skills move to complex styles and more expensive fabrics. Professionals often test fit freshly drafted pattern in a type of cheap cotton called muslin (it's not like the bedsheets, it's coarse and cheap) and work out any hitches in fit or proportion. It's a good habit to test anything new and unfamiliar in muslin first.

Those are the basics. Good luck and happy sewing.
