The most common way that people's details get unearthed is because people tend to stick to certain usernames across multiple sites. So all you have to do is google that username and you being to build a history of that person. The more sites you find that they have been on then the more information you gather. Sooner or later you might come across their name or location, and then you search on that information and get more information, and so on.
A good way to prevent this kind of thing happening is to never use the same username for different sites, and to not give out personal details on public forums other than perhaps your first name (unless it is a very unusual first name). The less personal history you put in the public domain then the less likely you are to be able to be tracked and found.
