Greatest Book ever written?

I think it is "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Answer
In the sense of literature art, the prize goes to the classics (in the age where books are highly appreciated.)

What's more, the listed greatest books I am going to give you are not even of English language--they are Russian (even more, you can hardly find them mentioned on Y!A) :
- Anna Karenina (1873-77) by Leo Tolstoy
- War and Peace (1869) by Leo Tolstoy
- Crime and Punishment (1866) by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Till now, "Anna Karenina" is the cut above the rest; the greatest of novels. In the mention of "Crime and Punishment", it is said "With the exception of "War and Peace", there is probably no Russian novel so universally read and admired as this masterpiece of Dostoevsky."* However, Dostoevsky's best work is "The Brothers Karamazov". (1880)

"What more can we call the greatest of all novelists?"
-Virginia Woolf, on refering to Leo Tolstoy

"A flawless work of art."**
-Fyodor Dostoevsky, on refering to "Anna Karenina"

p.s. "War and Peace" as mentioned above refers to the generally-known one, not the original version. The original version is recently published by Harper Perennial--a 'first draft' of the epic version known to all, it was completed in 1866 but never published. A closely guarded secret for a century and a half, the unveiling of the original version of 'War and Peace', with an ending different to that we all know. Due to that failed attempt, Tolstoy made them much longer with much improvements/alterations to the storyline and the characters as well then published "War and Peace" as we all know now.***

Thanks. Please be obliged to do rechecks.

What is the greatest book you ever read?

Hafeman 50

have you read other books by this author because of this? Mine is "Searching for God Knows What" by Donald Miller and it caused me to read every book he ever wrote

Answer
They are all great but they eventually blur together.

I do remember reading one with a somewhat shocking ending (for it's time). It must have made an impression because I remember it's name and the author's name from many books and years ago.

Hot Rod - Henry Gregor Felsen.

I don't really think it's great but it was a good snapshot of it's time.
