greatest books 20th century image

I read this back in Elementary school but I can't remember the name of the book. The plot is basically about this colonial type of town and people start to get sick. The protagonist had to go find medicine/doctors to save her family members. On her journey she discovers that her town is actually a tourist attraction; all the children thinks they're in the 18th century when the parents know that they are in fact living in the 20th century.
Something like that. Thanks!

Should schools give out Hunter Thompson books to read for classwork?
David M
He is one of the greatest 20th century writers, but no school would ever recomend his books to students. Why is this?
Answer
He liked to drink to access and then go shoot guns, and some of his language can be considered graphic for some high schoolers parents aka:PTA
However I think he's great, I've read "Hells angels", "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", "Fear and Loathing on the 72 campaign trail" , "Generation of Swine" and many others
