Is there any source out there that is nationally recognized and reliable that gives a list of the greatest books ever written? Not just some NY Times author's top 10 list! Please include a link if you can!

Any website isn`t likely to be 110% reliable, but BBC has named 100 of most well-known books (on the link above)... :)

What are the best books ever written?
Q. Hi, I'm doing a blog of 1,000 of the greatest books ever written for all types of people. anyways, me and my friends only got to number 928 and seem to be stumped. Do you know of any good reads? and I'll see if they are already on the list. It has everything from Jane Austen to J.K. and lots of others. What's some good books you recommend? Thanks
Thanks I'm getting alot of good answers that are not on the list, Catcher in the Rye is on the list.. but alot of these are not : ) TY

Answer
A Hero of Our Time - Mikhail Lermontov
The Invention of Curried Sausage - Uwe Timm
Perfume - Patrick Suskind (umlaut above the u in suskind)
Mila 18 - Leon Uris
Exodus - Leon Uris
The Professor and the Madman - Simon Winchester
Guns, Germs, and Steel - Jared Diamond
Murder on the Orient Express - Agatha Christie
The Master and Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov
Those are just a few off the top of my head.
*** I'd like to add a note - these aren't necessarily the first that came to mind, but the first that came to mind that I thought you might not have on your list.
