I read a book (Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett) and he said the character Ellen had "regular features and a sensual full-lipped mouth", could someone characterize "regular features" please? (I want to know because Follett mentions "regular features" for quite a few of his characters in a few of his books). Thanks
Answer
It's usually a British reference to someone with attractive, symmetrical features. The eyes are neither too big nor too small. The cheekbones are neither too prominent nor too shallow. The nose is not worth mentioning, as would be the case if it were retrousse or aquiline or flaring or hooked or a dozen other common references to a memorable "schnaz." The jawline is neither too square nor too rounded. The mouth is neither too wide nor too thin. The chin is neither pointed nor doubled.
To have regular features doesn't make someone unmemorable, it just makes the features harder to differentiate from a hundred other commonly attractive people. All in all, it's a kinder way to view people than the rigid pass/fail beauty standards that attractive people often force onto society, however unintentionally.
