Hello, and thank you for wanting to answer my question. I am doing alittle research on the Bible, and wanted to know if Jesus was whipped with a flagrum or just some old-fashioned leather whip. Although, I would prefer you answer me this question. What is one of the earliest accounts of the Romans using the flagrum that YOU KNOW OF. I don't need to know the most earliest, just tell me what you know. Just as long as it is anywhere before 31-33 A.D. I would prefer that what you tell me, you can back up either with your credentials (i.e. Professor in Roman History, Highschool World History Teacher, exc), or with a book, magazine, internet. Please, if you would try to give me the name of that site, book, magazine, or whatever . Thank you my friends.

Answer
The Roman flagrum, or scourge, actually predates the Roman empire. The scourge can be found in images of the Egyptian God Osiris dating as far back as 2400 BC.

Scourging was a normal punishment before crucifixion. Two documents, The "lex Porcia" and the "lex Sempronia" dating from 195 and 123 BCE forbade the flogging of Roman citizens, and the punishment was normally reserved for slaves, non-Roman citizens or those commiting what were considered heinous crimes.

The Roman lyrical poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65-8BCE) makes mention of the horribile flagellum (horrible whip) in his works and calls for its use to be discontinued.

It is most probable that the use of flogging as punishment long predated the Roman Empire, just as it continued long after the fall of the Empire, and still is a form of punishment used in many parts of the world today.

Hope this was complete enough to answer at least a few of your questions.

Which is the best book on Roman History?

I'm looking something for a beginner, written in a simple language that would grasp the the whole Roman history. It should be a non-fiction.
Thank you for your help

Answer
I had a hard time remembering who the author was, and there are so many books on rome it was hard to do a google book search. but here it is - the quintessential book on rome, or it's fall at least. I am not sure how easy a read it is, but the book is called the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. How do I know - because I study history and because Edward Gibbon - the author - died in 1794 meaning the book was written before that and it is still being published today. I provided a link to the book - well part at least. Scroll down a little and you can click on the links.
