I'm adopting a little brown mutt and want a cool, original name for him. I am looking at names either inspired by the 60's/70's hippie generation or great rock and roll bands (The Doors, Led Zeppelin, etc). Or a great name inspired by literature...cult classics or just great books. I couldn't think of anything that appealed to me from Jack Kerouac (he's my favorite)...but something along these lines..(a few idea I had):

- Atticus Finch (not very original, ive heard this a lot before)
- Tralala (like from Last Exit to Brooklyn...but thats a weird dog name and is a girl)

But that gives you kinda of what I am going for. Any suggestions welcome!

Answer
Scout from To Kill.... (If you think not too original then here are some others...)
Searcher (from the name of the rock group)
Who? (from the group The Who or even Guess Who from the group Guess Who)
Otis (for Otis Redding)
Kink (for the Kinks)
Zappa for you-know-who he-is
Steppenwolf
Ryder-for Mitch Ryder
Boo (both for the character in To Kill... or from the song Me and You and a Dog named Boo)
Bojangles
Arrow from Harry Nillson's Me and My Arrow
Stinkfoot by Frank Zappa
Atomic Dog by George Clinton
Elvis
Buck from Call of the Wild
Baskerville from Conan Doyle's Hounds of the Baskerville
For authors, how about the name Kerouac, Kafka, Dickens or Kipling
Dingo from Verne's A Captain at Fifteen or Nemo for his character Capt. Nemo
Potschky named for a friend of Kerouac's dog who ate a draft of his book
Charley from Steinbeck's Travels with Charley (his dog)

What does it mean to be a piece of literature?

I read a lot of teen books, like teen spy books or fantasy. But what does it mean to be a piece of literature? Are all books literature? I'm guessing alex rider or CHERUB is not. But I have read books like Pud n' Head Wilson by Mark Twain, and the book thief by Mark Zusak. Is that literature? Or is Harry Potter?

Answer
It's like saying that something is a "work of art". Literature is the ART of written work, so it is when books are written to entertain, and are successful in doing so. E.g. Great Expectations is literature because it is well known and is deemed artistic.
