How long on average would be a good amount of time to study for the MCAT?

Answer
Okay, I'll do my best to answer this question.

First off, the MCAT is a 5 hour test that will test about 4 years of science (and writing, but I'll get to that later). The scope of what could be asked is the (second, actually) most difficult part. You DO have to study everything. I recommend going here for the topics:

Make sure to get a study buddy. From there, you'll want to give yourself AT LEAST a good 3 months before the test to start studying, but if you want to do well, extend that time to about 6-12 months, mainly because of the large amount of information you'd need to go over. The good thing about extending time is that it means relatively little time each day, ~1-3 hour/day at first just going over what should be old topics. By the time you get to the 3 month mark, you should really have finished your review, and should spend the rest of your time (at least 4-6 hours/day) on PRACTICE TESTS. I cannot stress how important practice tests are. Buy review books from Exam krackers, Princeton-review and MCAT- review. Buy previous MCAT tests online if you have to. But I would advise AGAINST ordering the $1000+ courses, they usually don't help as much as the books and whatnot.

Overall, the number one hardest thing on that test is finding the right strategy for answering questions. Unlike most tests you may have taken, the MCAT doesn't test what you know, but rather how you apply what you know in ways most people don't understand. At least, not if they are new to the test. The test is timed, the questions are vicious and the passages range from superfluous to indispensable, and more than often, unintelligible. The test is out to get you and it swallows the unprepared. That's why I suggest the three months of topic review followed by a far more intense 3 months of test-taking prep.

Oh, one more thing, there IS some stuff on the exam that you may have not been taught yet, but as long as you realize that and start early

What is the best book to study with for the MCAT?

I want to have a head start and know what to expect, I am going to be a sophmore in college...but I want to start now. I know I have to work hard and no book in the world will give me the magical light of wisdom, but it doesn't hurt to get familiar with the types of things I need to know. Thanks!
