I am willing to put in as much effort as possible. Also, are there any good self learning books on Spanish out there? Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
a more realistic time frame, other than the 6 months(which would barely cover basics) is two years.if you already have a good head start i d say one year. Once you got your brain spinning the right way its a battle half won. I used to teach esl in a spanish speaking country, and the students who came out speaking had usually been at the school for about 2 years. ( a great tool is using movies with a sp sound track (with and without subtitles). avoid those with too much action. I know i practice my french that way.

Would you recommend reading book in spanish to help learn spanish?

I have taken spanish for two years and have a pretty good understanding of it. would it help me learn spanish if i read a book in spanish. They would probably be books i already read in english and on an easy level.

If you want a sure-fire confidence builder that will also teach you some new vocabulary I would recommend the Blaine Ray series which includes Pobre Ana and Casi se muere.

Reading books is a Great way to help! You can buy several dual language readers (Spanish on one page and English on the page beside). I use these in my Spanish classes.
