How expensive would it be to vacation in NYC?

My husband and I were planning about a 7 day getaway to New York City in either January or February. More than likely January though. We are going to be flying out from Sacramento more than likely, and I was looking at hotel and air fares combined for him and I, and seen that we were going to need about $2000-$3000 extra to spend money and play with over in the city. Is this a realistic amount? I was thinking food, taxi fare, sightseeing, souveniers....etc.

Do yourself a favor and start by checking prices on travel sites online. I highly suggest Expedia.com since you can get a discount if you book your air and hotel together as a package. January is one of the cheapest times of year to visit NYC, so, hotel prices will be at their lowest.
I just did quick pricing based on January 15, 2011 - January 22, 2011, and, as long as you don't want a 3 star or higher hotel. For example, I found the Radisson Lexington Hotel New York for a total of $1632 for 2 adults including your air.
As far as meals, check out MenuPages.com (http://www.menupages.com) this not only allows you to read reviews from real people but you can see menus with prices.
For a Broadway show, check out BroadwayBox.com (http://www.BroadwayBox.com) this is a legitimate discount site for show tickets. You'll get a discount code to use in conjunction with Ticketmaster.com or Telecharge.com
