Q. I just finished reading Anna Karenina and now I don't know what to read. Here's some books that I've read and liked a lot: Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre and Jude the Obscure. I like classic books like that, what books should I read?

Answer
You and I have the same tastes in books!

I love Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Since you like Jane Austen, you've probably read Pride & Prejudice, but if you haven't, you should. It's my favorite book by Austen.

My favorite book is Les Miserables. It's a huge book, but so is Anna Karenina, so I'm sure you can handle it. Les Miz has EVERYTHING and it's really the most inspirational, moving book I've ever read. It's a masterpiece. (Jane Eyre is my 2nd favorite book.) Victor Hugo, the author, also wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame. That was a good book as well, but Les Miserables is his best work.

You should try a book called Rebecca by Daphne duMarier, she fashioned it after Jane Eyre and it's very good.

Tess of the D'Urbavilles is by the same author as Jude the Obscure, Thomas Hardy. Very sad, very good.

Definately read Crime & Punishment by Fyodor Dosteyvesky.
And I also recommend anything Dickens. My personal favorite is David Copperfield.

I just finished "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." It is a classic in a sense, but was written in the 1930s. It's very touching as well, I really enjoyed it.

Oh, and I recommend Robinson Crusoe by Daniel DeFoe. It can be a kid's story, but it's a very adventurous and interesting book as well and a great book.

& Last but not least, you need to read The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinback. It's set during the Great Depression. It was an instant classic and it's very thought-provoking. (You could also check out East of Eden by him.)
