I just wanted to know what level my 5 year old/nearly 6 should be reading. She has just gone into year 1 at school and is reading level 3 books quite easily and with no mistakes, i just wondered if this is the correct level for her age. Also does anyone know how many books there are for each level?
Thanks in advance.
Sorry for any confusion, she is in year 1, not her class are reading level 1, im not sure what her class are reading, hence the reason for asking this question.
Answer
If a child is on schedule than he/she should read at the level corresponding to what grade they are in. So, a first grader would read at Level 1. A second grader would need to read at Level 2 to be considered average. However, each child is different so you will find children in First Grade who are not yet proficient at Level 1 as well as children who are reading above average at Levels 3 or 4 or even higher. As far as numbers of books, there are going to be literally thousands of books at different reading levels. Your child's classroom probably has a large selection of books along with the choices available in the media center. If you are speaking of a specific language arts curriculum that your daughter's school is using than you will want to discuss this with her teacher. Depending on the curriculum you may have a selection of books at each reading level along with suggestions for supplemental reading.

Can you believe a 5 year old child was handcuffed by police officers?
AB
A 5 year old child from Georgia who threw a tantrum in kindergarten class was taken in handcuffs last Friday .The teacher complained that the child was un controllable and tore items off the walls, threw books and toys on the floor. In my opinion instead of calling the police, the teacher should have called the child's parents or legal adult guardians to pick him up from school.
Answer
No, I can't believe it. When I heard about that story, my mouth dropped. It's pretty pathetic to handcuff a 5 year old. You are right- the teacher should have called the child's parents.
That child just needed her butt beat one good time. She wouldn't last 10 minutes around my parents.
