What are the best books to read to elementary aged students?

3rd through 6th grade boys and girls in a low income/high risk school. I know it's important to read to students, but I want to read them books that will build their character and boost their self-esteem.

I really liked the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. While Frontier life normally bores me, I loved her stories of growing up and what it was like.

Another was Harry Potter, though careful with that. I remember being in school and one of the parents complained about the teacher condoning witch craft and she couldn't read Harry Potter to us anymore---which angered everyone, because that's what really inspired me to pick up books and read.

But maybe you should pick books based upon your kids' personalities. Or maybe take a vote? If they want mystery or comedy or something. Or have it theme based from week to week or month to month.

Any tips on how to find out what 6th grade math class is doing currently? Any online info? I need to tutor a 6th grade boy in new york city and iam not sure what he needs to know since i do not think he has a text book. he needs to catch up. Any tutoring advise on how to tutor since i am just begining my business.

The best advice is to contact the math teacher. He will be glad to give you the curriculum and indicate the weakness of the boy./
