How do you use a Compiler or link to a Compiler to use C++?

I have C++ for Dummies and another book. I have Xcode. I hear everyone tell me that I need a compiler, but I really need the steps to do this. I find this a bit confusing. I usually only use programs, like Photoshop and Illustrator, not doing the actually programming. I have a Mac OS X Lion.

I'm learning c++ with a book also. The compiler that I use is called visual C++. You write your program then just hit the compile button which will build link and compile it all at the same time. You can download it for free i think also. Another compiler I have used is called dev C++ which you can download free also.

So I was wondering I want to create an app with x code and ive read some books and stuff and I am a total beginer. I have no experience with app making or coding but I would like to try and I was wondering how much it would cost. I heard there are annual fees and some licenses and stuff but I just want to know.
