Does anyone else believe that 2012 is just another method of the media to rake in money?

I walk into book stores and it is filled with books on 2012. History channel has 100's of shows on 2012. They even made a movie on it, and as i drove through LA i saw a huge poster saying "2012, we were warned." I cannot help but see this as nothing more then a scare tactic.

I think it's a bunch of garbage. No one really knows if the world is going to end. And if the world does end. Nobody knows what day or year it will happen. People said the end of the world was going to be in the year 2000. It came...and nothing happened. It's just like saying when a person is going to die.

How can I narrow down the topic of 2012?

I have to write a research paper, and the topic is simply "society." We are free to narrow it down from there. I have just received a book about 2012, and while I do not believe that the world will end, I think it would be an interesting research topic.

What are some ways I could narrow down the topic to fit under the general topic of "society"?

I'm not really certain what it's called but "hysteria" is probably a good way to describe it. See "tulip bubble", "war of the worlds", "Y2K", and "the dot com bubble".

I suppose "Social Hysterias" or maybe "Famous Social Hysterias of History" would be a good title.
