Q. As an assignment for a video class, we have to adapt a short story into a screenplay. I want to take it to the next level: shoot it and maybe submit it (it depends on how good it is... one thing at a time). If I want to do this, can I use a public domain short story or play? And if so, is there a place where I can see if a story is PD?

Answer
Yes, you can use public domain short stories as a film script. Actually, a great idea. Go to Gutenberg.org for hundreds -- if not thousands -- of pd books, many containing short stories. Good luck -- wish I could see your film!

How do you get permission to write a film about an old poem?

I'm writing a screenplay partially based on Samuel Taylor Coleridge's 1798 poem "Kubla Khan" and I wanted to know if it is public domain by now, where i would get permission if I have to and any other information you can give me. Thanks

Answer
Coleridge wrote the poem after he read a book about Kubla Khan, it is in public domain, and certainly any screenplay would have to draw on other sources.
Here's some info about Kublai Khan-He would make for a great movie I think!.

Kublai Khan (1215-1294) was a Mongolian leader who made an impact on China, not only through conquest, but also by ruling successfully. Many of the rulers before him were brutally land-hungry and apathetic to the conquered people; however, Kublai challenged the stereotypes of Mongolian rulers by investing in his newly acquired people and providing the foundations of a grand empire. Unfortunately, after turning from his nomadic heritage and adopting Chinese manners, his Mongolian government failed to remain in control and was eventually overthrown by the Chinese.
