I am a college student that had to read Frederick Douglass' book, A Narrative in the Life of Frederick Douglass an American Slave. For our final we have to write a paper on why the book is so great. I need help coming up with reasons. Why is it such a great book, and why is it on the Literature Canon book list?
Answer
FD is what may be termed an "overcomer," someone with the sense of victory. Such is not remarkable in the White community (Emerson, Twain, Dickinson, et al.); in the Black community, such clarity has been rare, so his work stands alongside the insights of Emerson, Twain, and Dickinson, in terms of self-liberation, self-realization.
FD is no different in terms of quality than Emerson, Twain, and Dickinson, but while the latter are remarkable for their insight, FD is remarkable for the same qualities, as the 19th century Black community in America produced no other writer and lecturer of similar quality.
A similar 20th century American, in a different field, was Eric Hoffer, a longshoreman who wrote insightful books http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Hoffer Interestingly, his successor is often said to be Thomas Sowell, an African-American http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Sowell

Recommend me the best book to give my friend as a present?
--V--
He likes Poe, Lovecraft, Borges, british authors, american authors, which could be the best book you can think of to give him???? I really want to get him a great book, he loves literature and I owe him a lot. Thanks for your suggestions. Perhaps an anthology, he doesn't like poetry. He's 30
I'm looking for something really nice, but not ordinary, he's already read harry potter's books
I'm willing to spend a lot in the present, as long as it is something memorable.
Answer
Terry Pratchett writes fantasy satire, really good... Guards! Guards! or Nightwatch or Small Gods or Monstrous Regiment.
Neil Gaiman is an excellent author, writes kinda dark fantasy for the most part. Good novel would be American Gods, good anthologies would be Fragile Things or Smoke and Mirrors.
Simon Green writes the Nightside series, that's kinda fantasy-horror film-noir. You might need to give him the first couple books at once, because the first few books in the series have about 150 pages each. First book Something from the Nightside.
All authors above are British, though I think Gaiman is now an American citizen.
