We always hear of how proud Koreans are of their 5,000 year history, so I'd like to know what there is to be most proud of (such as inventions or anything else meaningful on a worldwide scale).

Korea became a unified country in 676 when Shilla unified the three kingdoms on Korean peninsula. At that time, much part of world did not have unified kingdoms and many western and northern Europeans were nothing but barbarians. Needless to say, the USA did not even exist on the map.
Both woodblock printing and movable type printing technologies were developed in Korea in the 13th century which was far ahead of Europe's Gutenberg. Hundreds of thousands of books were printed using the older technology of woodblock printing, creating the world's first print culture.
Hangul, the Korean characters, is one of the most logical, scientific and creative writing systems in the world. The Hangul was promulgated by the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty, Sejong the Great in 1446.
South Korea successfully hosted the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games ahead of Spain and many other "developed" countries. Korea has been ranked top 10 in the medal standings since 1984. Korea has always won the most medals in Asia in the Winter Olympic Games due to its mighty strong Short Track athletes.
After the Korean War, Korea was completely destroyed and dirt poor. Korea was one of the poorest nations in the world. The Koreans, however, did not give up and worked very hard for a better tomorrow. The Korean economy started its spectacular growth in the 1960s. In less than 40 years, South Korea's per capita GDP/GNI skyrocketed - a per capita GNI of US$ 67 in 1953 and US$ 10,000 in 1995. Korea's per capita GNI grew 200-fold in the span of only 40 years. It is no exaggeration to say Korea's the only country in the world that developed so rapidly in a short time. Today, China, with its 1.3 billion population, is developing at a rapid pace, but in the 20th century, the title of "miracle economy" has to go to the Koreans!
