I'm looking for some great books to read before college. What I'm mainly interested in is non-fiction books about American culture/history. Social criticisms about all those topics that school texts just don't explore very deeply. I guess I'm looking to be enlightened before i go on to pursue (hopefully) a career in psychology or sociology. The more Provocative the better.
Answer
the great gatsby
the crucible
grapes of wrath
i forgot the rest, but we are reading american classics this year.

Could the book water for elephants fall under the nonfiction genre?

I have to find a book that is nonfiction for my English class. If this book doesn't fall under nonfiction could you please suggest a really great book that is? I love history so, could you please suggest something really interesting from history?
Answer
I don't get tired of suggesting this since it's such a great book ( '-')
An excellent war/history book that won't bore you at all is Generation Kill.
It's based on the experience of recon Marines involved in the Invasion of Iraq. The book's perfect in that it's a light and funny read, but it's full of strong ethical themes.
So while the characters are screwing around, there's still the fact that they're fighting a war and that people get killed because of their actions.
It's based on a true story of recent events that everyone can relate to since it's a war our country and the world is engaged in.
As for your Water for Elephants, unless this is an actual true story, it's fiction.
EDIT:
Be warned, this book has a lot of jokes and comments that although they'll leave you laughing, they can be a bit on the sexist and harsh side.
(It's the Marines, deployed and invading a country with no way to pass time in between other than being cynical comedic bastards).
